Bon Fires and Pumpkin Spice

Cooler weather is on the horizon. Hoodie weather, bonfires, pumpkin spice everything, and heaters on first thing in the morning to knock the chill out of the air. What happens when you crank the heat on and nothing?

Have you had your gas heaters and furnaces serviced yet? Have you had your chimney swept in the last few years?

September is the best time to handle these items before the technicians get way to busy to handle all the calls. Remember it's cheaper to pay for seasonal maintenance on a Wednesday in September at 9 am than a November weekend at night when the heater hasn't been properly serviced.

What to do:

Call your gas provider. Companies will send a technician, or refer you to one, to come service your equipment. They will also send you information that every homeowner can do to prolong the life and safely operate the equipment. Have some knowledge before lighting pilot lights and how to properly shut them off.

Call a chimney sweep for a thorough cleaning and inspection. Clean the ash pit regularly and ensure damper doors are shut when not in use. Install a chimney cap if not already installed to ensure rain and leaves do not travel into the chimney and into the home.

Safety:

If you are the space heater type, choose a quality one and not the one from the local dollar store, which is prone to catch fire randomly because of cheap parts. Always turn off and unplug the space heater when not in use or when you leave the property. Remove or tie up drapes that are touching baseboard heaters to prevent burning and catching fire.

Gas heaters should be vented outside and not be used in sleeping rooms. The build-up of carbon monoxide could be dangerous and even fatal. Always have proper ventilation and CO and smoke detectors in each room and hallway. Call your local fire department for detectors and someone to install them if you need assistance.

Fall is the best time of the year! Prepare today to enjoy tomorrow!
